Set your eyes free! Lasik is a Laser-assisted surgery designed to give you 20/20 vision without the need for contact and glasses. Lasik is intended for those who want to eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts. Our eye doctors at North York Eye Clinic are experienced and have had LASIK done as well. We would be happy to consult with you about your candidacy and answer your laser eye surgery related questions.
LASIK – Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis – is the most common refractive eye surgery today. As of 2019, over 12.5 million LASIK procedures have been performed in the United States and over 30.5 million have been performed worldwide. LASIK surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist who uses a laser to reshape the eye’s cornea in order to improve visual acuity.
LASIK is the premier surgery for vision correction. It is quick, almost painless and there is little or no discomfort after the procedure. Vision recovery is rapid – patients report seeing 20/20 within 24 hours.
The best candidate for LASIK is age 21+, has healthy eyes with adequate corneal thickness. This is necessary because LASIK procedure removes tissue from the cornea to reshape the eye.
Chronic dry eye, corneal disease or other abnormalities may disqualify a candidate from LASIK surgery. A comprehensive eye exam is required to be sure. For your convenience, the doctors at North York Eye Clinic are happy to provide LASIK pre-operative exams and consultations at our office. The optometrists at North York Eye Clinic are also involved in post-operative care to ensure that the cornea and vision are healing properly post surgery.
Note that LASIK is an elective procedure and proper consideration must include the weight of personal needs, potential gain, and willingness to accept the risks involved. There are no guarantees that LASIK will absolutely succeed in your expectations. The results are not always perfect vision. In some cases, your vision after LASIK may be permanently less clear than it was with glasses before LASIK. This outcome must be factored before deciding on LASIK surgery.
Certainly, there is upside. In normal circumstances and conditions, LASIK can reduce your dependence on glasses and almost always gives you the ability to function well without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is similar to LASIK. Both PRK and LASIK represent advances over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of refractive errors of vision. For patients with moderate to high myopia or thin corneas which cannot be treated with LASIK, PRK is an alternative laser eye procedure that can be used to correct myopia and astigmatism.
Corneal thickness, refractive error, lifestyle and hobbies will help the doctor to determine if PRK or LASIK is a better procedure.

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) are made from either purified collagen or acrylic and are surgically placed inside the eye, between the cornea and iris. ICL is ideal for individuals who are not good LASIK candidate because of their thin corneas, high myopia/astigmatism/hyperopia, large pupils, or chronic dry eyes, implantable contact lenses could be a good alternative for long-term vision correction.
EVO brand ICL surgery is intended to safely and effectively correct myopia (up to -18 dioptres [D]), reduce myopia in patients with up to -20 D of myopia, treat astigmatisms up to 6 D and treat hyperopia up to +10 D.
ICL is a reversible procedure; the lens can be easily removed if the patient is experiencing any post-operative discomfort or complications, and the eye is returned to its preoperative state.
Please call our office at 647-352-5553 to schedule an eye exam and ICL consultation.
EVO ICL, also called an Implantable Collamer® Lens, is a refractive implant to correct common vision issues like myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. Unlike some other vision correction options, the EVO ICL is an additive technology that corrects vision without the removal of any corneal tissue
Refractive lens exchange is also known as clear lens exchange or refractive lensectomy, RLE is a surgical procedure that involves removing the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It is the same procedure to cataract surgery. RLE is essentially the same procedure without the presence of a cataract. Like LASIK and other modern eye surgeries, refractive IOLs have allowed millions of patients to achieve 20/20 vision or better without the need for corrective lenses.
As mentioned, the procedure itself is essentially identical to cataract surgery and involves removing the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with one of three IOL varieties:
Monofocal IOLs are the most basic option, providing clear vision for a single distance type (near, intermediate or far). Monofocal IOLs can be used to correct nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatism prescriptions but will allow the best sight for either distance or reading only. Multifocal IOLs are premium lenses that provide correction across multiple distances at fixed points. Accommodating IOLs are the most advanced, and allow clear vision across all distances; near, intermediate, far and every point in between. The optometrists at North York Eye Clinic will help determine the best IOL option for your specific needs during your consultation.
